Colon/Rectum Q&A

What are colon and rectum cancer?

Colon cancer begins as a growth of cells in the longest part of your large intestine. This cell growth, or polyps, isn’t always cancerous and initially causes no symptoms. However, it can become malignant over time.

While colon cancer develops at the beginning of the large intestine, rectum or rectal cancer occurs in the last few inches of it and extends into the anus.

Colon cancer is sometimes called colorectal cancer, but colon and rectum cancer must be treated differently because the rectum’s structure makes removal surgery a complex process.

What are the symptoms of colon and rectum cancer?

Neither may initially present symptoms, but colon cancer may eventually cause:

  • Rectal bleeding or bloody stool
  • Disrupted bowel movement habits, such as more frequent instances of constipation or diarrhea
  • Feeling constant discomfort in your abdomen, such as gas, cramps, or pain
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unintentional weight loss

Both colon and rectum cancer may make you feel like your bowel movements are “incomplete.”

Rectum cancer may also cause symptoms like:

  • Blood in your stool that may range from dark maroon to bright red
  • Narrow stool
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Losing weight
  • Feeling tired or weak

If you have worrisome symptoms, talk to the Shore Point Radiation Oncology Center team. They can investigate the source of your symptoms and either alleviate your fears or begin a treatment plan immediately for the best possible outcome.

What are the risk factors for colon and rectum cancer?

You are at greater risk for these cancers if you:

  • Have a history of polyps or have previously had colon or rectum cancer
  • Have diabetes
  • Drink alcohol heavily
  • Eat an unhealthy diet
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease
  • Struggle with weight challenges
  • Are over 50
  • Smoke
  • Are sedentary

The team can help you take preventive steps, such as making healthy lifestyle choices, scheduling regular screenings, and controlling other health conditions that might contribute to colon or rectum cancer.

What treatments are available for colon and rectum cancer?

If you are diagnosed with colon or rectum cancer, the team determines the best approach to treatment based on your cancer type and location. They may recommend:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Palliative care
  • Targeted therapy
