Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept my insurance?

Shore Point participates in almost all insurances, including Medicare. We will not turn away patients for lack of payment. We will work with patients to make the co-payments reasonable and affordable.

Do you offer free transportation?

We offer free transportation in our comfortable mini vans.

Do you have CyberKnife?

No we do not have CyberKnife. We do five day stereotactic radiation therapy with our Varian TrueBeam® machines. Varian is a much larger and utilized company then Accuray who makes the CyberKnife machine. Most major Centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York use the Varian machines rather than CyberKnife to do their five day stereotactic treatment.

How long do I have to wait for a consultation?

Typically consultations are seen within a week of the request. However, urgent consultations can be seen within a day or two.

How soon will I start treatment?

Treatments will be started as soon as indicated. If additional testing is necessary, we will start when the results are in. If all testing has been completed, then we can start right away.

Do you have flexibility in scheduling the treatments?

We generally have flexibility for patients to choose when they are treated as far as morning or afternoon. If your preferred time is not available immediately we will move you to that time as soon as it becomes available. In addition, if you have other appointments we can move your treatment for that day so that you don't miss them.

Do you have the latest equipment?

Yes. We have the Varian high energy accelerators that are capable of IMRT, Rapid Arc and image guided radiation therapy, as well as five day stereotactic radiation. We also have the latest physics planning equipment and a 4D capable fast CT scanner for simulation.

What about protons?

Protons offer an advantage for certain cancers, particularly those in children. They also provide benefit for some brain tumors and other less common cancers. For almost other cancers they have not been proven to achieve better results. The treatment are much more expensive and most insurance companies will NOT approve proton treatment for adults with prostate, lung, breast or other common cancers.

Isn't it better to go to a large Hospital or "Cancer Institute"?

Short Point offers many advantages compared to the large institutions, including personalized care and adapative therapy with more flexibility to meet the patients needs. You are guaranteed to get a radiation oncologist with a lot of experience, rather than a physician recently out of residency who may staff a satellite facility in Middletown or other Centers affilitated with "a big name cancer Center". Please see the list of reasons to choose Shore Point.

If my physician referred me to go to another facility, can I still go to Shore Point?

Yes. Hospitals have bought multiple practices, and these physicians are often obligated to send their patients to that hospital. However, any referring physician must honor the patients request to have treatment elsewhere or go for a second opinion.

What cancers do you treat?

We treat virtually all adult cancers. Our radiation oncologists have many years of experience and have successfully treated thousands of patients, including uncommon cancers.
